Provo River Recon - Xmas Eve, 2009

Skifish Story image

Provo River Canyon south of Heber City, Utah:

The past SkiFishin' week was spent in Little Cottonwood Canyon, Utah. Skiing at Snowbird and Alta was fair with mostly hardpacked conditions. The Wasatch Range needs more SNOW SNOW SNOW ..... please. help bring it to the Cottonwood Canyons by rubbing the belly often and with positive thoughts.

Visit to the local fly shops yeilded some great local information on the nearby Provo River, one of Utah's premier trout streams. This fishery offers the winter fly fisherman a variety of trout targets including German Brown, Rainbow, Cuthroat, Brookie and Whitefish. Catch restrictions are strictly enforced so PLEASE, familiarize yourself with the local regulations when you purchase a Utah fishing license.

Access to the river is well documented and readily available in Shook Book Publishing's "Provo River Fishing Map & Guide". Their website is www.flyfishguides.com. Our copy was purchased from High Country Flies for $10.50. A small price to pay for such reliable, accurate, and instantly useful information.

We took our recon trip on a stunning Christmas Eve day using ONLY this map as a guide. We wanted to test its accuracy and utility. The Skifish Team was very pleased with the results. Turnouts and parking areas were found where expected from reading the map and it was broken down by river section making it easy to find what you were looking for.

While we saw VERY FEW fishermen on this glorious holiday eve, a pow wow with a local Sherif's Deputy revealed this was NOT the norm. The officer made it clear that one should expect to share this wonderfully accessible river in the winter months with possibly MANY other fishermen.

This is a beautiful section of water that has received a lot of restoration work from dedicated fishermen in greater Salt Lake City area and beyond. While pressure on this water is significant due to its close proximity to high population areas, it can be very productive according to the locals. Good streamside etiquet, #22-24 nymph patterns . 7x tippet and warm clothes will help you make your SkiFishing adventure to the Provo River one to remember.

If all goes well, the Skifish Team will be filming a Skifish the World episode here late February, 2010.

Tight turns and taught lines,
Joe and The SkiFish Team
